Joe Burrow’s Super Bowl Run

The legend of Joe Burrow continues to get bigger and bigger…

The son of former Ohio University assistant football coach Jimmy Burrow, Joe grew up in Athens. He was the star quarterback at Athens High School and led the Bulldogs to the state championship game. The team lost a very close contest that many say was one of the best games ever in Ohio.

athens high school 2014Burrow also was a basketball star at Athens and helped the team win their conference and a district championship.

He was named the Gatorade Player of the year for football for the state of Ohio. And then, he signed to play at Ohio State University. He played well while backing up star quarterbacks, and then transferred to LSU after his sophomore season.

He then started at LSU as a junior and led the Tigers to the National Championship as a senior. While at LSU, he turned the people of Athens Ohio into Tiger fans. On most Saturdays, the televisions in Athens were tuned into see the hometown star.

He also won the Heisman Trophy as the nation’s top college player at LSU. Even bigger than the award, he used his platform to help raise funds for food pantries in southeast Ohio.

And after being the No. 1 draft choice in the NFL, Burrow has helped to turn the Bengals around. The Bengals have been bad for decades. In most seasons, they did not make the playoffs. And in the rare times when they did make the playoffs, they could not pick up a win.

Super Bowl Burrow

This year, led by Burrow, they defeated the Raiders for their first playoff win in 31 years. Then, they upset the No. 1 seed Titans thanks to a game-winning drive in the closing minute by Burrow. And then to win the AFC title, they defeated the heavily favored Chiefs in overtime. This amazing season culminated in a razor thin loss in the Super Bowl, (the Bengals first appearance since 1988,) to the favored L.A. Rams, 23-20.

Best of all, Burrow has been a winner off the field. He gives great interviews and often praises his teammates. He also stays in touch with friends from Athens, Ohio, and even comes back to town from time to time.

And he has the people of Athens and southeast Ohio excited about the Bengals and the NFL.

It’s been a tough few years with the pandemic, and a lot of people in southeast Ohio live hard lives. But Joe Burrow has put a spark into the community, and he has become a national star.

And somehow, this is only his second season in the NFL. Where will it go from here? It will be fun to see what happens next for the Athens’ favorite football player.
