Special Events: December in Athens
December in Athens is a very different place over the winter break, but it is a perfect place to spend the holidays. While most of the students leave their Ohio University rentals over break, Athens is still vibrant and amazing.
Here are a few holiday traditions you can see, if you remain in your Athens Ohio apartment over the break.
- Uptown Athens Holiday Lights – Every night is festive in uptown Athens. The lights and decorations are amazing.
- Horse and Buggy Rides – Every December, horse and buggy rides are available at set times in Uptown Athens. The rides are a holiday favorite for many local residents.
- Holiday Movies – The Athena Cinema offers special holiday movies that are fun for people of all ages each year. You can check out this year’s schedule at this webpage.
Santa spends December in Athens!
- Santa Claus in Uptown Athens – Even Santa has an uptown Athens apartment! His is located on Court Street next to the Courthouse, and opens up for children to visit.
- Santa Train – The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway offers a special Santa Train ride each December. Located in Nelsonville, the popular Santa Train is just a short drive from Athens. It is great fun for the whole family.
- Holiday Concerts – Live music in Athens, Ohio is spectacular throughout the year, and December is a special time. You can see holiday concerts at local theaters and auditoriums, church events, traveling shows and regular music in Uptown Athens. In addition to the Christmas shows, you can also find some terrific New Year’s Eve concerts in Athens each year.
- Sports – It’s not a holiday event, but there are some great sports events in and around Athens each December. The Ohio University men’s basketball team will even host Purdue University from the Big Ten Conference on Dec. 17.

One final point about a December to remember in Athens is the weather. Winter gets started in December, but it’s usually not too cold.
Athens is scenic any time of the year. When snow falls on the College Green and the city rooftops are covered in white, though, the city looks magnificent.
The city is an easy place to walk in the snow, and you never have to go to far to get to a store, restaurant or friend’s house. Sometimes we have warm Decembers and sometimes we have colder Decembers, but it is always pretty and peaceful. December in Athens Ohio is special.
