Famous Ohio University Alumni (Part-2)

The world is filled with famous Bobcats. We have Bobcats in the movies, in the government and even in the Hall of Fame. And it’s likely we have some future famous Bobcats living in Athens Ohio rentals right now. Click HERE for Part One of this Series. Or Part Three

We will continue our series of spotlighting famous Ohio University alumni:

Arsenio Hall – The famous comedian/actor is another well-known Bobcat who did not actually earn his degree at OHIO. In 1972, Hall became the first member of his family to attend college when he began his studies at Ohio University. He did not earn his degree here, but this Bobcat went on to become a major star. He even had his own late night tv talk show.

Vlatko Andonovski – You may not know his name, but you know his work. A very recent Ohio University graduate, Andonovski is the head coach of the United States Women’s National Soccer Team. It is the top team in the world, which make sense since it is led by a Bobcat. He earned his master’s in education degree from Ohio University in 2018. He has also coached in the National Women’s Soccer League and is a former professional soccer player.

From the Harvard on the Hocking, to the Hall of Fame

Mike Schmidt at Ohio UErma Bombeck – The well-known American journalist and humorist was born in Dayton in 1927. After high school she attended Ohio University. While she also did not graduate from here, she went on to become one of the best-known writers in America. Her syndicated column was published in newspapers all across the country from the 1960s through the 1990s. She also wrote numerous very popular books.

Joe Eszterhas – A very different writer, Eszterhas wrote the screenplays for movies such as “Flashdance,” “Jagged Edge,” “Basic Instinct” and “Showgirls.” He actually did graduate from Ohio University, where he majored in journalism and English. He was active with The Post while at OHIO, and went on to be a successful journalist and writer.

Mike Schmidt – One of the greatest third baseman in baseball history is also a Bobcat. A New York Times article from earlier this year also referred to him as the greatest MLB draft pick ever. Schmidt came to Ohio University in 1967, made the baseball team and eventually became a starter.

The teams he played for won three MAC championships and advanced to the College World Series. He went on to play for the Philadelphia Phillies where he won a World Series.

He is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame and is regarded as one of the best baseball players ever. (Pictured at right, do you recognize Bird Arena and the library in the background?)

All of these Bobcats and many more lived in Athens. And many of them stayed in the Athens Ohio apartments or houses for rent that are still here today.
