Famous Ohio University Alumni

You may not realize it, but there are a lot of famous Bobcats.

It wasn’t that long ago that these stars were taking classes here and living in local rentals. You may even live in an apartment that once was home to someone famous. That’s fun to think about, but also kind of odd. View Part Two, and Part Three.

A few famous individuals from Ohio U.

Paul Newman – Known around the world for his acting abilities, Newman is also known in Athens for being a Bobcat. Born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Newman grew up in Ohio. He attended Ohio University, but did not graduate.

You’ll find that a lot of famous Bobcats attended but did not graduate for some reason.

He went on to become one of the world’s biggest movies stars. His movie career included starring in the well-known movies, “The Hustler” and “The Color of Money.” Both movies were based on books by our next famous Bobcat.

Walter Tevis – Tevis was not a student at OHIO but taught at the university for 14 years. He taught English Literature and Creative Writing at Ohio University from 1965-1978. Several of his books have been turned into very popular movies. These include “The Hustler” and “The Color of Money.”

They also include “The Man Who Fell To Earth,” a cult classic that features David Bowie. The recent popular Netflix series, “The Queen’s Gambit” is also based on a Tevis novel.

Bart Simpson, Chuckie from Rugrats and many others

Ed O’Neill – Best known for his roles on “Married with Children” and “Modern Family,” O’Neill is also a Bobcat. Fans of his television character know that Al Bundy once scored four touchdowns in one game. (It is still believed to be a record at Polk High!) O’Neill really was a football star in high school and received a football scholarship to attend OHIO. He played on the football team for two years before leaving the university.

Nancy Cartwright – Don’t have a cow, man, but the voice of Bart Simpson, attended Ohio University on a scholarship in 1976. She left the university in 1978 and became one of the most famous voice actors in the world. She provides the voice of Bart Simpson and many other characters on The Simpsons. She also is the voice of Chuckie on Rugrats and many other popular television and movie characters. Cartwright received an honorary degree from Ohio University when she spoke at Commencement in 2012.

Piper Perabo – Perabo earned a fine arts degree from Ohio University in 1998. She is well-known for starring in the movie, “Coyote Ugly,” and the television show “Covert Affairs.” She has also been in numerous other major movies and television shows.
