What will Halloween in Athens look like this year?

Halloween in Athens Ohio will be very different this year. In most years, the city throws a Halloween party that is unlike any other. The streets of Uptown Athens are filled with costumed partiers. In addition, bands play music on the streets and vendors sell food, drinks and other items.

The city also fills up with visitors. People come from across the Midwest to stay with friends who live in apartments in Athens Ohio.  In addition, many of the student rentals in Athens Ohio host their own Halloween parties.

The official Halloween Block Party is always on a Saturday, but the celebration fills the whole weekend.
Due to COVID-19, though, the city of Athens has announced that it will not host the event this year. The city will not close off the streets in Uptown Athens. The city will also not host bands or other performers.

Ohio University, meanwhile, has much fewer students on campus than usual this fall due to COVID-19. The university also will not host any Halloween festivities. In fact, the university is not hosting any events that normally bring visitors to Athens this fall.  That means there will be no in –person Homecoming, no family weekends and no crowds at football games.

So what will Halloween in Athens look like?

You can be sure there will still be plenty of costumes in Athens. As for what exactly will happen, no one knows yet, but history may give us some clues.

For many years, the city did not sanction Halloween and did not close off any streets for the party. During those years, the partiers simply took over Court Street at a certain time in the evening.

The costumed jaywalkers poured onto the street, which stopped traffic and turned it into an impromptu street party.

It’s likely that some costumed revelers may try that this year, but it will be difficult to pull off.  One obstacle is that there will likely be fewer people in town.

Also, city and university police and other officials may be more active in trying to stop the street party. The city and university are working together to follow COVID-19 protocols and hope to stop large crowds from forming.

The most likely guess is that Halloween will mainly take place at houses and student rentals in Athens Ohio. The bars will likely have plenty of costumed customers, but they have limits on how many they can let in.

Expect to see costumed partiers on the porches, on the sidewalks and waiting in line to get into the bars. Just don’t expect a usual Halloween party in 2020.

Hopefully, everyone stays safe this year and no one contributes to the spread of COVID-19. And finally, we will hope that the 2021 Halloween in Athens Ohio will be better than ever.
