Ohio Bobcats Football Preview

This should be a big year for the Ohio University Football team.

The team should be very good and the schedule features several outstanding games, including a visit from an ACC team. In addition, Peden Stadium’s atmosphere should be very lively with most COVID-19 precautions for fans now lifted.

OHIO coaching legend Frank Solich retired this summer. The team is now led by Tim Albin, a longtime offensive coordinator and assistant coach. Albin’s offenses have put up record numbers in yards and points in recent years. With Albin now as the head coach, you can expect the Bobcats to be exciting again this year.

The Bobcats bring back two quarterbacks with experience to lead the offense. Redshirt sophomore Kurtis Rourke, the brother of former Bobcat star Nathan Rourke, is an excellent passer. Senior Armani Rogers, meanwhile, is an outstanding runner who adds another dimension to the offense.

The offense also boasts a wide range of playmakers, including several from Athens County. Seniors Ryan and Adam Luehrman (who both starred at Athens High School with Joe Burrow) will both play tight end. Nelsonville-York High School graduate Keegan Wilburn, a sophomore wide receiver, is also hoping to make plays for the Bobcats.

At running back, senior De’Montre Tuggle is the one of the best in the MAC. The offense could be explosive. The defense returns most of the starting defensive line, and the defensive backs also have plenty of experience. The key will be to develop a strong pass rush. Overall, the Bobcats boasts experience all around the field. If a few breaks go their way, this could finally be a MAC Championship season.

Watch the Bobcats take on Syracuse, Miami and other opponents in Athens

Solich, the winningest coach in MAC history, retires July 2021.

The Bobcats will welcome back fans for the first time since 2019 with a huge game against ACC opponent Syracuse. The Sept 4 contest will be shown on the CBS Sports Network.

Archrival Miami visits Peden Stadium on Tuesday, Nov. 2 for the annual Battle of the Bricks. This game is always fun, and it would be a great year to beat the Redhawks. Miami is expected to challenge OHIO for the MAC East title, along with Kent State and Buffalo.

The Saturday, Oct. 9 Homecoming game against Central Michigan should also be huge this fall. It will be extra special after alumni stayed away from Athens in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Other schools visiting Athens this year include Duquesne, Kent State and Toledo. The Rockets are the favorites to win the MAC West, which will make that game very important.

And no matter the opponent, the Marching 110 is always worth the price of admission. The Most Exciting Band in the Land is amazing and will have several unique shows planned for the fans.

Peden Stadium is a short walk from most Athens Ohio apartments, and it is a fun atmosphere for college football.
