What you need to know about the Ohio University winter break
The Ohio University winter break creates a quiet holiday season in Athens, but it is still very festive. If you live in an Athens Ohio apartment, you’ll find that December is a magical time of year. While December is the busiest shopping season for much of the country, it’s a different story in Athens. Here are a few important things to know about the holiday season in Athens, Ohio.
Finals Week starts on Monday, Dec. 9 – A large number of the students will be leaving their residence halls or Ohio University rentals during finals week. The town will still fill up on Saturday, though, for Commencement.
The holiday break begins with the Ohio University Commencement Ceremony – Ohio University holds a fall commencement to end the semester. This year that ceremony is on Saturday, Dec. 15 in the Convocation Center. The one ceremony is for undergraduate and graduate students and is fairly large. It is not, though, as big as the spring commencement ceremony.
The winter break used to start on Thanksgiving – Back when Ohio University was on quarters, the break lasted all the way from Thanksgiving until the new year. The six-week break gave students plenty of time to work at home and make money for college. Unfortunately, the long break also emptied out Athens for all of December. The current break is much better for local businesses, and it keeps Athens lively in December.
Ohio University Winter Break: Athens is wonderful place
The university is still open, most of the time – While classes are not in session after Fall Commencement, the university is still open most of the time. The university offices do close on Christmas Eve, though, and take a break until they reopen on Jan. 2.
Spring semester classes begin on Monday, Jan. 13 – You should expect students to return to town on the weekend of Jan 11-12.
Athens is still a fun place over break – While the city is not as full, it still boasts a great variety of events.
