Will Athens host Spring and Summer Festivals in 2021?

With COVID-19 numbers finally decreasing and the temperatures rising, many people are wondering about outdoor festivals in Athens Ohio.

What will happen with the annual street parties in Athens Ohio? What about special events such as the Nelsonville Music Festival and Boogie on the Bricks? How about summer sports?

If you are living in Athens Ohio off campus housing this spring and summer, what special events can you expect?

While we don’t have all of the answers yet, here is some information for you for spring and summer:

Palmerfest and other street parties – Street parties such as Palmerfest, Highfest and Millfest are a sign of spring in Athens. Students living in Athens Ohio off campus housing organize and host these events every year. Students enjoy gathering on porches and in yards, and the street parties have become extremely popular. Currently, though, the state of Ohio still has rules in place limiting mass gatherings. While these events may take place in one form or another, expect them to be much smaller than usual. Local officials will not want students gathering in large numbers in close proximity.

Nelsonville Music Festival – The biggest event of the summer is the Nelsonville Music Festival. In most years, this event brings nationally known performers to Athens for a festival unlike any other. The 2020 event was held virtually due to COVID-19. Festival organizers recently announced that the Nelsonville Music Festival will not take place in June 2021. The good news, though, is that organizers hope to hold smaller events in the summer and fall.

Boogie on the Bricks – This amazing event takes place on the streets of Uptown Athens each summer. The Court Street festival had to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021, and no update has been provided for 2022.

No Copperhead baseball, but hope for the Pawpaw Festival

Pawpaw Festival – The 2021 Pawpaw Festival is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 17-19, 2021. The organizers are hoping to hold the event, but say it is too soon to know for sure. You can watch for updates on the Pawpaw Festival website.

Southern Ohio Copperheads baseball – The summer baseball team, made up of top college players from around the Midwest, will not play this year.

Athens County Fair – The county fair, a summer tradition for many people, is still tentatively planned for August 2021.

We are fortunate to have so many outdoor festivals and special events in Athens Ohio. While we won’t have a normal summer, there will still be plenty to do this spring and summer. For more information on spring and summer events, check out the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau website.
