The Legend of Joe Burrow continues to Grow
Athens’ favorite quarterback is about to become Ohio’s favorite quarterback.
Joe Burrow took the nation by storm last year with his outstanding play. In fact, the hometown hero completed what some have called the greatest college football season ever.
The Athens High School graduate led his LSU Tigers to the National Championship. In addition, he won the Heisman Trophy and just about every other award there is.
All during the fall, area residents gathered around the televisions in their Athens rentals and Uptown establishments to watch Burrow play. The resident of The Plains never disappointed, and now he is poised for an NFL career.
In the NFL draft, Burrow was selected as the No. 1 overall choice. This is an astounding honor, especially for someone from rural Southeast Ohio.
As the top choice, though, that means Burrow is going to the team with the worst record in the league. While going to a bad team may be rough, the good news is that team is the Cincinnati Bengals.
Ready to lead the Cincinnati Bengals back to the playoffs
Burrow will begin his professional career in Ohio. He will lead a team located just a few hours away from Athens.
The Bengals have been led in recent years by Andy Dalton, who was steady but not spectacular. Dalton led the Bengals to several very good seasons, but the team could not win a playoff game. The last few seasons, though, have not been very strong for Dalton or the team. The team released Dalton this spring, which indicates that Burrow likely will start at the beginning of the season.
While the Bengals were bad last year, fans of Burrow and the team do have reason for optimism.
First of all, the team suffered several serious injuries last year. The players injured included star receiver AJ Green and first round draft choice Jonah Williams.
A left tackle with great promise, Williams will be a huge help to the Bengals and to Burrow in particular. Having Green back on the field will also provide Burrow with an explosive weapon and a savvy veteran.
The Bengals also made several other key moves in the draft and free agency to improve on offense and defense. Led by young coach Zac Taylor, the Bengals have a chance to improve dramatically.
In high school and college, Borrow showed poise, intelligence and athleticism. He will have to adapt to the professional game, but he appears ready for the challenge.
His father, Jimmy Burrow, is a former professional football player and college football coach. Joe Burrow has been around football all his life, and the experts expect him to excel in the NFL.
Burrow has already turned several Cleveland Browns fans in Athens into Bengals fans. It’s a sure bet that southeast Ohio will be rooting for Burrow and the Bengals this fall.
