Athens Life During Covid-19

The Athens Ohio community, as goes the world, adjusts to the “new normal” as Covid-19 ravages global health and taxes the health care system beyond imagination. We see more and more masked pedestrians as protection methods increase while Ohio Governor Mike DeWine relaxes the “Stay at Home” order to allow people marginally more freedom as we thread the needle between avoidance and interaction.

This of course continues to include grocery stores, supply stores, medical facilities, and the like, but is yet to include bars and restaurants, a huge economic force in Athens, which have no real timeline yet to return.

To have the bars and restaurants shut down in Athens truly is a blow, as the uptown area is centered around such industries, and seeing them all closed up, particularly on what would normally be a roukous Friday evening in April as graduation draws near, no shuffles, no fest, no fun.

However there are signs of routines as a drive down Court Street is sure to unveil at least one porch party on any given day, groups of pedestrians on their way somewhere, and the occasional game of hackey sack on the deserted college green, but overall there are massive reductions in the amount of people out and about, on the streets, and in the shops, which takes some getting used to.

It is still not clear the future of Fall Quarter at Ohio University, as of now they plan on re-opening, but as with many topics surrounding the Covid-19 virus and its impact on local communities, much remains to be seen and learned before any final decisions are made.
