Christmas Activities in Athens for 2021
Athens comes alive during the Holiday Season. Ohio University may close and many Athens Ohio rentals may have fewer people, but the city is filled with activities.
Here are a few events for you to watch for during the Holidays in Athens Ohio.
Santa Claus in Uptown Athens – The Jolly old elf has his own Uptown Athens apartment in December. He has a workshop right on Court Street where he puts together toys for Christmas. Visitors are invited to stop by to see Santa on these special days: Thursdays, Dec. 9, 16 and 23 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Tuesdays, Dec. 11 and 18 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
Athens Holiday Film Series – The Athena Cinema in Uptown Athens shows special Holiday films throughout December. These films are fun for the whole family. The price of admission is just a donation of cash or canned food items for a local food pantry. This year’s films include “Elf,” “Muppet’s Christmas Carol,”, “Polar Express” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” For information on dates and times check out the Athena Cinema’s Holiday Series.
Performance of “Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol” – See the timeless story of Scrooge, the ghosts and Tiny Tim come to life on stage. Ohio University will host this outstanding performance, which features amazing costumes, wonderful music and incredible performances. Holiday concerts, markets and other special events
Communiversity Band Holiday Concert – Enjoy the sounds of the season with this entertaining band made up of university and community performers. The show begins at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19 in the Templeton Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
Athens Holiday Market sponsored by the Athens Art Guild, Athens Farmers Market and the Market on State – A fun place to buy unique and thoughtful holiday gifts.
Columbus Symphony Holiday Pops – See the Columbus Symphony perform at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville. The concert will be held on Dec. 11, and you can find information on tickets for the show at this website.
Winter Solstice Hike – Enjoy a scenic 1.5-mile hike on the shortest day of the year. Burr Oak State Park is the host for the Dec. 21 hike, which is free and will begin at 2:00 p.m. The park naturalist will lead the hike, and those wanting to take part should meet in the lodge lobby.
Special events in Uptown Athens – Athens also hosts carriage rides and special concerts on Court Street during the Holidays. For more information on the Uptown Athens events, visit the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce website.
Santa’s Drive-Thru – The Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott will host an event for families to drive thru to see Santa and Mrs. Claus. This free event takes place on Dec. 11 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.
