Neat Communities Around Athens That You May Not Know About

Many people come to Athens for school or work, and don’t get to see the local communities. If you live in a student rental, you likely spend nearly all of your time in Athens.

While we all love Athens, you owe it to yourself to see some of the nearby communities. Here are a few local places you should visit.

The Plains and Eclipse – The Plains is located very close to Athens. If you haven’t been to the village yet, you have probably at least seen the signs for it. The Plains is a quiet, but very pretty community. One highlight is the Eclipse Company Town. Eclipse is made up of historic coal company mining houses. Today, many are the homes of businesses, while some still serve as homes. The old company store is even a restaurant and host for special events.

Nelsonville – If you live in an Athens Ohio apartment, you should stop in to see the city of Nelsonville. The city is home to Hocking College, Rocky Boots and the historic Public Square. The Public Square features art galleries, restaurants, businesses and the incredible Stuart’s Opera House. Stuart’s Opera House attracts internationally known performers and hosts plays, concerts and a wide range of special events.

Amesville – A shot drive down Ohio Rt. 550 is the small village of Amesville. Here, you can enjoy a nice walk, have a delicious meal and visit a scenic small town.

Be sure to visit these Ohio River cities

Marietta – A little further away is the Ohio River city of Marietta. This historic city has a beautiful and vibrant downtown. It also has a wide selection of restaurants and shops to visit. Marietta is located in Washington County and is about an hour away from Athens. It is worth the drive.

Pomeroy – Located in Meigs County, this Ohio River city is unique. Much of the city is located in one long stretch of roadway that travels along the river. Pomeroy is filed with antique shops, restaurants, coffee shops, small businesses and beautiful scenery. The city also has plenty of places where you can sit and enjoy the Ohio River. In most years, it also hosts regular concerts along the Ohio River. Pomeroy is a short drive from Athens.

Gallipolis – One more Ohio River city to visit is Gallipolis. Located about an hour away in Gallia County, the city has a wide variety of restaurants and businesses. The downtown area is beautiful, especially around the holidays.
