Summer Construction around Athens
Ah, summer! The grass is green and the days are long. The warm summer air is filled with sounds of birds singing, kids playing and jackhammers jackhammering.
This year is no different, as there will be plenty of construction projects taking place around our favorite city. If you are living in an apartment or house for rent in Athens Ohio, be aware of these projects.
Stimson Avenue project – This is the biggest project in the city by far this summer. Stimson Avenue is a busy street filled with businesses and apartments for rent in Athens. This year, the city is completely renovating the street and sidewalks.
The street will be closed to one lane of traffic throughout the summer, and that lane likely will be very bumpy. Construction work will continue until November.
So, if you are visiting town or living in Athens this summer, plan for construction on Stimson Avenue. If possible, please also plan to support the businesses on and around Stimson Avenue during the construction.

Highway projects and new buildings
Construction on campus – Ohio University recently finished two major construction projects. Heritage Hall is now open on West Union Street and the Chemistry Building is open on campus. The university is now renovating Clippinger Hall, which is near the Ping Center and Emeriti Park. The University is also planning to tear down one more residence hall on the South Green. It is likely that will happen this summer, too.
School building projects– The Athens City School District is in the middle of a huge building project. Currently, the school district is building two new elementary schools and renovating a third. The new East Elementary School building located near East State Street is scheduled to open in August.
The new Morrison-Gordon Elementary School building on West Union Street is also set to open in August. The district is also renovating and adding to the elementary school building in The Plains.
Highway projects – The highway projects around Athens this summer include:
Bridge painting projects on U.S. Rt. 50 – One project will be between Rolling Hills Acres Road and Ervin Road. Another will be between Blackburn Road and the ramp to U.S. Rt. 33. Both projects will mean some lanes will be closed on U.S. Rt. 50 until mid-September.
Ohio Rt. 682 paving in The Plains – This project will mean traffic will be slower in The Plains. Flaggers will be on the street during the road work, which will continue until July 30.
